IMG Re-Adaptation to Medical Practice in Australia
This program is designed to assist IMG doctors in navigating the challenges of finding employment and successful re-adaptation and re-entry into medical practice in Australia, irrespective of their background.
Two Pathways
1. Independent Pathway – For pre-employment IMG doctors who are willing to pursue employment independently or who are about to commence practice as medical doctors in Australia.
2. Employment Pathway – For IMG doctors who require assistance with securing employment/AHPRA registration.
1. Independent Pathway
A. IMG Re-adaptation to Medical Practice in Australia (Traning Course)
A 4-week intensive training course designed to assist international medical graduates to successfully re-enter medical practice in Australia. Lectures and workshops are delivered by Specialists/Consultants, Advanced Trainee/Senior Registrars and Allied Health Specialists.
Mode of Delivery - Online
Topics covered will include:
- The Australian Health System
- Understanding medico-legal issues in Australia
- Australian Work Culture and Ethics
- Workshop on multidisciplinary Healthcare approach
- In-depth teaching/workshops on the JMO Duties in different Departments
- Communication concepts in healthcare delivery
- Australian Approach to Clinical Practice in different Units of Healthcare Delivery (including General Practice)
- Clinical handovers and formal consults
- Clinical Audits and Research for Junior Doctors
- Workshop on resume preparation & response to selection criteria
- Acquiring skills for medical interview
- Career Workshop
B. 2-day intensive Hospital/Emergency Skills Workshop
This will involve in-depth training and skills acquisition in:
- Venepuncture/IV Canulation
- Arterial Blood Sampling
- US-guided IV cannulation
- Urethra catheterisation (male/Female)
- Airway management/Intubation/Ventilation
- Fracture reduction, application of splints and cast
- The technique of Surgical Hand Scrubbing/Gowning
- Basic suturing skills
- Fundamentals of ECG interpretation
- Blood gas interpretation
- Hospital Emergency Code Systems
- Lumbar Puncture
- Mode of Delivery: In-person, in-hospital
2. Employment Pathway
After the job advertisement, the number of candidates selected will be based on the available employment spots as specified by our recognised employers.
This pathway is for IMG doctors who require assistance with securing employment/AHPRA registration.
Eligible candidates who are selected for this pathway will undergo the following training:
- Interview Training sessions
- IMG Re-adaptation to Medical Practice in Australia (Traning Course)
- 2-day intensive Hospital/Emergency Skills Workshop
- Observership with employer (optional)
- Assistance with the AHPRA registration process/documentation (from start to finish)
Minimum requirements
- Completed at least AMC 1 (Both pathways) - However, preference will be given to candidates who have completed AMC 2.
- Have a valid work visa (Employment pathway) - A valid Visa must allow a candidate to work for a minimum of 20 hours per week.
- Candidate with recency of practice (Employment Pathway) - Candidates who do not meet this criteria will be considered based on the employer's requirements).
- Completed Basic Life Support Course (Both pathways)
- Have met English requirements as per AHPRA guidelines at the time of application (Both pathways).
3. Two Days Intensive Skill Acquisition Workshop at The Alfred Hospital Melbourne.
This is an extensive preparation course for essential skill acquisition which we offer to all Junior doctors and IMG doctors.
Sessions include:
Day 1
- Venepuncture/IV Canulation
- US guided IV canulation
- Arterial line Insertion
- Lumbar Puncture
- Urethra catheterisation (male/Female)
- Fundamentals of ECG interpretation
Day 2
- Airway management/Intubation/Ventilation
- Application of splints and cast
- The technique of Surgical Hand Scrubbing/Gowning
- Basic suturing skills
- Blood gas interpretation
- Hospital Emergency Code Systems
Fees: $800 per participants (for two days).
Morning tea and lunch is provided on both days.

4. Comprehensive Career Support Package
This package is designed to assist IMG doctors on how to understand the job requirements of advertised junior medical officers’ job.
This 4-hour online session will cover:
1. How to identify suitable jobs based on your personalised experience/qualifications and the job requirements.
2. Resume Preparation Workshop
3. Strategies for providing appropriate “Response to Selection Criteria”
4. Preparing for a Medical Job Interview
5. One hour one-on-one practice session for all participants (based on appointment with program director).
Fees: $250 per participant

- You will be informed if admitted to the course via email.
- Thereafter, payment of the course fee ($2,200) should be made to the account provided.
